When you remove the strap from the packaging, the Velcro is fastened together so the strap forms a circle, the same way it will encircle your suitcase.
To separate: the ID pocket has two pieces of Velcro that are stuck together on either side. Split the top and bottom pieces apart, open into a 'V' and remove the other end of the strap. There is a separate plastic piece near the single sided piece of Velcro called the 'slider'. The slider allows you to adjust the length of the strap to fit the suitcase up to 72"long.
To lengthen the strap, move the plastic slider piece toward the ID pocket. To shorten the luggage strap, move slider away from the ID pocket. If you want the strap very tight and secure around your bag, after you've packed, pre-measure the strap to fit snugly around the width of the suitcase before fastening.
Once your bag is packed and fastened, put one end of the strap under the handle to keep it from sliding off the suitcase in the event it is not pre-measured to be tight and secure. Circle the strap around the width of your suitcase. Then stretch the single end of Velcro into the open 'V' and close the 'V' so the Velcro attaches on both sides.
Pull on the ID pocket while holding the slider to take out any slack.
